Nepenthes 'Bloody Mary - this carnivorous plant is quirky and unusual, with furry, blood-red boxing glove pitcher 'jugs' that collect water and trap insects. My pitchers are the colour of raw meat to attract flies!

Bloody Mary is a new hybrid between ampullaria and ventricosa.

Monkey Jars are officially known as Nepenthes. While you've probably never heard of this genus, you've undoubtedly heard of carnivorous plants. Well, that's exactly what Nepenthes is. These climbing plants grow in tropical rainforests like those found in Borneo. They can easily grow up to fifteen metres high. (Don't worry, you won't have to re-roof your house when you buy our Monkey Jars!)

Care TipsMy family and I are from the tropical rainforests of Borneo and the surrounding area, which is nice and humid just how we like it. I understand that a rainforest might be hard to find in colder countries, but the more similar my new home is to a rainforest the happier I will be. I drink a lot.

Light: Bright indirect indoors, I love being where it is light, but where I'am not in direct sunlight.

Watering: You probably already know that I hate it when my roots are dry. I’m happiest when you keep my roots damp by adding small amounts of water. Normally, I’ll be quite happy if you water me with a watering can twice a week when I am indoors. But that really depends on the situation. Watering me twice a week might be just too much or just not enough. So make sure to check that my soil is always damp. If it is a little dry, I would love another sip of water!

I love to shower: To water me, just put me in the sink. Or even better: give me a shower! I’m used to tropical rainforests, remember? And a shower means no water on your nice carpet…

Extra Water: To water me, just put me in the sink. Or even better: give me a shower! I’m used to tropical rainforests, remember? And a shower means no water on your nice carpet…

Temperature: I’m quite comfortable at temperatures between 16 and 24 degrees. Easy, right?

Humidity: medium to high. Use a plant sprayer to keep me humid. If you want to pamper me like I’m in a wellness resort, then use a plant sprayer on me each day to keep my leaves humid or buy me a humidifier that way, I will feel like I am back home in the jungle!

Location: greenhouse, terrarium, windowsill, bathroom

Plant Type: Perennial, tropical.

Origin: Southeast Asia.

Extra Info: Although I can live for a long time, my pitchers will drop and make way for new ones periodically.

ToxicityPitcher plants are not known to be poisonous to cats. ... As with any plants, you do want to avoid allowing your cat to eat these plants as they can cause tummy upset. However, no major side effects or lasting effects have been noted involving felines and pitcher plants.
