Rhipsalis Baccifera Oasis ‘Mistletoe Cactus’ in hanging pot

Rhipsalis are a type of ‘jungle cactus’, and have the nickname of mistletoe cactus based on their similar appearance. They will gradually trail over the edge of the pot and hang down as they grow.

Rhipsalis are unusual in that they aren’t native to hot and dry desert regions of the world. They differ in that they prefer a warm but humid environment and lower light conditions. It’s native range includes the tropical and subtropical rainforest and coastal regions of Florida, the Caribbean, South and Central America, along with tropical regions of Africa stretching into Sri Lanka.

Light conditions: indirect, bright light (for example not on a windowsill that gets direct sun at any point in the day). Can tolerate a couple of hours of morning and evening light.

Neediness: This is a low maintenance houseplant. It will benefit from occasionally dusting the leaves to unblock its pores and rotating to ensure even growth.

Watering: As it is a cactus it is sensitive to overwatering (the roots can rot if kept wet) so just water when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch. Aim for moist but not soggy soil. This plant will let you know when it is thirsty because the leaves will lose their rigidity.

Humidity: Moderate to high humidity

Ideal location: bedrooms, living rooms, studies, offices, bathrooms and kitchens

Temperature: keep at a normal room temperature.

Pets: this plant is toxic to cats and dogs.

Also known as: Mistletoe Cactus or Rhipsalis Baccifera

Rate of growth: slow growing but in their natural environment tendrils can reach 20ft! They are unlikely to grow longer than can be handled at home. If any of the stems are damaged, trim them with a clean, sharp knife. You can use these cuttings to grow a new Rhipsalis.
