Maranta Leuconeura Variegata Prayer Plant 30 cm

The Maranta Leuconeura Kerchoveana Vareigata, or Prayer Plant, is a beautiful, low maintenance houseplant with attractive leaves. Its oval leaves are medium green with grey green shading in the middle and two rows of chocolate blotches on each side. It's easy going nature makes it the perfect plant for beginners. This Maranta prefers bright, indirect sunlight and will need to be watered regularly during the summer months. Water when the top inch of soil is dry and mist occasionally to increase humidity around the plant.

Maranta is commonly known as a prayer plant because the leaves have an unusual habit: they are able to close up at night! The process is called nyctinasty and the purpose of it is to catch as much light as possible, then close for protection as the light fades. Maranta is named after an Italian botanist, Bartolomeo Maranta. They are related to Calathea house plants, which also have attractive foliage. Relatively easy to look after.

Light: This plant can tolerate a shadier spot but ideally place it in a space with indirect, bright light. Direct sunlight will burn its beautiful leaves.

Watering: Naturally found growing on forest floors, it likes to be quite humid so during Summer months water it when the first inch of soil is dry. Reducing in Winter to when 2-3 inches are dry.

Humidity: Love High humidity - doing great in the kitchen or bathroom!

Temperature: Prefers to be kept at a minimum temperature of around 16 -20 º C or higher.

Toxicity: Non-toxic to children and pets! 

Origin: Tropical Brazilian forests.
